Make Your Business Boom with Social Networking

When we think of social networking, we tend to think of teenagers who meet up with their friends online to chat and share pictures and videos. But social networking is a part of Web 2.0, the revolutionary marketing philosophy that has taken the Internet by storm. More importantly, social networking is a powerful tool that you can use to gain a wider audience and more potential sales.

The faces of social networks are many and varied. MySpace is the quintessential social network, with Facebook and Friendster hot on its heels. YouTube has many aspects of social networking; the ability to add “friends”, to share links and videos, and to leave messages for everyone in your network. Even blogs and message forums have been called mini-networks.

All of these sites share a common theme: interactivity. People don’t want to stare at a generic web site; they want to feel like they’re a part of the action. That’s where social networking comes in. It gives people a forum to speak their mind, share their likes and dislikes, and provide valuable feedback. It makes them feel like they matter.

So what does this mean for your business? Everything! For starters, social networking can dramatically increase your exposure. At their heart, these sites are designed to put you into contact with your friends, their other friends and colleagues. Let’s use Facebook as an example. When someone adds you as a friend, you’re suddenly visible to their entire network of friends. Those friends can then invite you to be their friends, opening doors to even more networks – and more exposure.

You can also use social networking to target your marketing campaign. Do you sell musical instruments? Join networks devoted to the music industry. Are you in the real estate business? Use social networking to get familiar with homebuyers and investors in your area – or all over the world. You need only look at the popularity of Google AdSense and AdWords to know that targeted marketing is a good idea. Bring your message to the people who really want to hear it, and you’ll see better results.

Social networks also add to your perceived credibility. People will see your name on someone’s list of friends and think, “Well, if they’re friends with my friends, they must be okay.” This instant familiarity will make them more receptive to your message.

So what’s the catch? Social network marketing takes time. Anyone can set up a Facebook profile in ten minutes, but you’ll need to devote time to the friends you add. Start a discussion with them and be available to answer their questions. Develop a rapport. If you have a blog, you need to keep it filled with fresh content. Respond to comments left by your readers, and ask them for their input. Interactivity mixed with a personal touch will send your popularity surging. Do these things yourself, or outsource to someone who shares your vision and likes interacting with others.

Social networks are more than just places for friends to get together. They’ve given us a unique forum for marketing our goods and services to a broad and interested audience. Keep your social network sites updated and active, and you’ll find that you’ve got a valuable marketing tool at your disposal.
